Crude 1860s New England Stoddard Amber Jar Bottle Pontil Era

STODDARD . An early Stoddard smoothbase utility jar that has been repaired. The outward rolled lip is very crude and uneven and the base is early and smooth. as this jar was created using a whiskey bottle mold.

Heavy glass (1lb 12oz). Early form with uneven shoulders. Deep sunken rough sand chip pontil base. Remarks: This bottle has three attributes I look for in early black glass: heavy glass, early form, and a rough pontil base.

The bottle is made of a very deep dark olive green colored glass. Sitting on the shelf it appears nearly black but you can see the color when held to a strong light. The bottle has a rough pontil scar on the bottom and there are no actual mold seams present.
