The sides are very closely stitched white quills. This was made by Lorraine Besito, who is one of the talented quill box makers from the Georgian Bay area. She was born on the Parry Island Reserve and now lives on the Saugeen Reserve in Ontario.

This vintage hand carved stone small bowl is I believe from Haida Northwest Coast tribe. It depicts a lobster wrapping around top to bottom and large pincers on either side. It is 4" by 4-1/4 inches across and weighs almost 1-1/2 pounds.
