While there is often confusion amongst Cowlitz basketry from the southern Puget sound region vs. the Plateau basketry of the Kilickitats, most of the materials and construction suggest it is Cowlitz in origin. An antique, late 19th or early 20th century basket bowl from the Hupa/Yurok peoples of Northwestern California. The basket measures 6 3/8" diameter by 4 1/4" tall. It is decorated with lines and blazes in chocolate brown. The condition is very good. The only issue is a 1" section of the rim, which can be seen in the second image, that is missing the top row of weavers. LARGE OLD THOMPSON RIVER SALISH INDIAN BASKET WITH BROKEN HANDLES 17 BY 12 BY 10
This is a large, 17 by 12 by 10, old basket from British Columbia, Canada. It is conifer root decorated with red and black cherry bark in a great traditional form. Originally it had 2 handles attached to the rim. Those were broken off but still remain and could be repaired. Also the "foot" that was added at the completion of the basket is about two thirds lost. The remainder could be cut away allowing for a more even look. I will allow the buyer to make any and all repairs. Really a good looking basket with designs that pop, worthy of a place on your shelf.
