vtg Tlingit Hand carved Raven Pole signed Chief John M. Shakes ca 1930, Wrangell
vintage model of the Raven Pole of Wrangell, Alaska. Hand carved by Tlingit Chief Shakes - John Michael Shakes 1875- 1942. Pencil signed as shown on the back of the carving. The top is Grandfather Raven with a woven hat, next is a Box of Daylight, followed down the carving is Mother Raven and Raven Child in human form, next is Raven and Human. Mother Raven is missing her beak, included, and needs to be re attached. this measures 18 5/8 inches tall. Chief Shakes is known for carving details of the wings on the sides of the pole. Paint is as shown, in excellent vintage condition.

HAND MADE NATIVE AMERICAN BEADED LEATHER FETISH, TURTLE AMULET VINTAGE
OLD NW COAST TSIMSHIAN INDIAN TOTEM POLE METLAKATLA ALASKA
This 10inch tall totem model is made from cedar that has darkened to a nice patina from age. On the back of one wing we can make out the faint pencil inscription that says: "Metlakatla Indian", (very faint). The stylized carving has an eagle on top of a sitting bear who is holding his tongue out with another eagle on the bottom also biting the tongue with his beak. One wing repaired and a small chip on one ear that has been colored in. See pics. Email questions.

Freda Diesing was a Haida woman of the Sadsugohilanes Clan, one of very few female carvers of Northwest Coast totem poles and a member of the Council of the Haida Nation of British Columbia, Canada. Her Haida name is Skil Kew Wat, meaning "magical little woman ". She was best known for her contributions to reviving traditional Haida art forms, including wood carving, mask carving and totem carving. She was one of the few women carvers who mastered the medium, and was partly responsible for bringing the style to an international audience. Diesing worked to ensure the style and tradition of Haida art was passed on to new generations.
