Kurtis Antone was born in North Vancouver, B.C., in 1970 and he took a keen interest in wood carving at the age of eight years old. He would carve under the guidance and direction of his brothers Roger and Mike Antone. He has been carving since 1988 and Kurtis is an adaptable artist who primarily uses red and yellow cedar for his medium. Aside from his brothers, his teachers were Pat Natrall Sr. and Percy Paul. Both these master carvers have passed away and left Kurtis the knowledge of the heritage of the design he uses. Kurtis has developed his own unique West Coast style, incorporating images of animals that come from family crests and legends common to the Coast Salish Community. These stories and myths have been his inspiration throughout his carving years.

ANTIQUE c1890-1920s NW COAST ALASKA INDIAN ARTICULATED DEER MASK - XLNT!

A wonderful early NW coast mask found in a collection of Tlingit items in the state of Washington. It has an articulated mouth with "hair on" deer hide under it's chin and is made of red cedar. UNDERNEATH, THERE IS A HOLE THAT SUGGESTS IT WAS HELD UP ON A STICK...there is also some glue residue on the inside base which does not appear to have served any function. There are also nails all along the side with remnants of what appears to be fur. FIT FOR THE BEST OF COLLECTIONS it is bound to stand out in any display from advanced through museum grade. and it has NO RESERVE !.

It is mounted to a Footed Oak wood base. I believe it was created well before 1850. CONDITION: The bonnet displays signs of great age but is in excellent condition. The Oak wood base is in excellent condition also, with one of the round wooden feet displaying just a minor loss of paint.
