An order 1781 written and signed by Jeremiah Wadsworth, Commissary General of the Continental Army at Hartford, to the French Agent at Newport, Rhode Island to pay on a Bill of Exchange of Paris. Wadsworth served as Commissary Agent to the French Army at the request of General Rochambeau. Since this bill was payable in French money, he was acting on behalf of the French Army. French Army Rev. War documents are rarely found. Wadsworth was a member of the Continental Congress 1787–8, U.S. House of Reps. 1789–95. He founded the Bank of North America in Philadelphia & Hartford Bank in CT. As with most officer swords of that era, pinpointing a specific country can be impossible. Sword stays put due to "door dents" in scabbard which was purposely done to keep the sword from rattling. One ring has an old repair (see pic).

This is a Unique Napoleonic War Era French Saber, that has been cut-down, and made into a Fighting Knife/Bowie Knife. This Sword may have been repurposed for Civil War use. Just a guess. The Blade shows Heavy Patina, with Nicks, Flea Bites, all the way down the edge. It appears it has seen its share of conflict. Knife is SOLID as a Rock! He was in a Connecticut Regiment, in the Northern Army and became sick , while serving. Apparently, he must have spend the sum of four pounds , eighteen shillings , on medical expenses, so the State is going to reimburse him . Signed by John Lawrence, State Treasurer and the committee authorizing payment. Northern Army documents are reasonably scarce. Free shipping.
