1936 3.2 Emerson & Stevens Handmade Connecticut Axe on Octagonal Hickory
1936 3.2 E&S Handmade Connecticut pattern axe, out of Maine. Clean patina, with light to moderate makers mark. “W” stamped clear under poll, indicating this head was tempered by Everett Watson of E&S. Clean convex grind of ~26 degrees. Hand made and fit, smoked Hickory haft. Carved octagonal from top to bottom. Thin grip ( less than 3/4” width) with hard hook at swell for a hard stop at the palm during swing. Hand oil burnished for a very smooth feel. Wedged 2 3/4” full kerf depth with Yellow Poplar. Clean fitting eye with strong compression. Total length is 27 1/2”, total weight is 4 lbs 7.6 oz. I have flattened the back edge as well as I could, and sharpened the Bevel. It is fairly sharp now and I would argue in serviceable condition for rough sewing work. Total weight is 8lbs 12oz. I estimate the blade to be about 7lbs.
