By the early 1960s, Studebaker was struggling as evidenced by a sales drop of over 20 percent in 1961 compared to 1960. Perhaps an even more obvious showing of Studebaker's financial troubles is best shown by a comparison of its sales of 103,000 units in 1961, compared to Chevrolet which sold 343,000 Bel Air models; yes, you read that right, a single Chevrolet model outsold the entirety of Studebaker's lineup in 1961. Looking to shake things up, Studebaker's newly minted president, Sherwood H. Egbert, turned to his friend Brooks Stevens, a renowned industrial designer who transformed Willys' passenger car line in the mid-50s, to restyle Studebaker's aging Hawk line.

West Coast Classics are proud to present an exceptionally straight and rust free and older restored example of this 1948 Studebaker M15A 1 1/2 Ton Pick Up Truck with it's 'Champion' 169 c.i. straight 6 cylinder engine, which is quite powerful for this truck, and its original 3 on the tree manual column shift transmission with overdrive. The truck is a very rare truck in rust free condition and which is a great candidate for an enthusiast to fully restore or simply a great daily driver as it is. Studebaker was in the vehicle business long before anyone else, after having set up a blacksmith's shop in South Bend, IN in 1852, building two farm wagons that year.

This 1962 Studebaker Champ 1/2 Ton Pickup is a nicely restored half-ton pickup with southern history and is ready to roll! When the Champ debuted in 1960, Studebaker was coming off a brief upswing in financial fortunes due to the sales success of the Lark. With the increased cash flow from the Lark's success, the struggling South Bend company was able to finally reinvigorate its truck division which had a long history but was lagging at the time. Introduced in 1960, the Champ was Studebaker's new light-duty Pickup which used borrowed parts from the Lark that were adapted for its new truck. By 1962, Studebaker's financial troubles had worsened, with the company ultimately exiting the automotive business in 1966. Despite the fact that the Larks had been restyled in '62, the Champs retained mostly the same look from the previous year.

The 5 brothers grew up moving around a few states but settling in South Bend, Indiana. Their dad was a wagon maker and so he taught his children the skills needed to do the work of building a wagon. But John was an explorer, John wanted to head West to the great gold land of California where gold is so plentiful not a single soul is poor." He landed a job with blacksmith H.L. Hinds who asked him to build a wheelbarrow on his first day of work. The first design was rejected.

Exterior Two stage Apache Red coats this truck, a lovely color for this Lark fronted pickup truck that was intended to compete with the Ford Ranchero and Chevy El Camino at the time. As such, it has a relatively long bed which extends well past the rear axle.

Not all Golden Hawks were gold, but it is certainly a fitting color for the model and its unique body shape and drivetrain. The Studebaker family immigrated from Germany and arrived in Philadelphia in 1736 and became wagon makers in York, PA. This car, currently in eastern Pennsylvania, is a descendant of that early manufacturing.

Riding the momentum of its strong 1950 performance, Studebaker entered 1951 facing a more challenging sales climate. Even so, the South Bend-based independent automaker delivered one of the most distinctive and forward-thinking lineups of the early 1950s. For the 1951 model year, Studebaker offered two primary series: the budget-friendly Champion and the upscale Commander. At the pinnacle of the range sat the Commander State Convertible- the most luxurious and highest-priced Studebaker available in 1951. The biggest advancement for the 1951 Commander models was found under the hood. Each Commander came standard with Studebaker's all-new 232.6 cubic inch overhead valve V8 engine, rated at 120 horsepower.
