Scarce Antique English Pewter Infusion Mug, Carpenter & Hamberger, c 1794 - 1825

This pint-sized pewter infusion mug was crafted in late eighteenth or early nineteenth century in London, England by the partnership of Henry Carpenter & John M. Hamberger (PS26) for medicinal purposes. Such pots were used to alleve bronchial conjestion. Camphor and boiling water were added to the mug and, through a tube inserted into the opening on the center of the lid, a patient would breathe in the resulting fumes. Overall height: 5 1/4". Possibly an English-export piece; obtained in the U.S.

This hardcover book has some serious issues. The text is barely attached to the binding due to complete cracking of the front hinge. The endpapers and title page as well as the first 32 pages of the mining laws section are missing. Several pages have earring to the bottom corner. Nevertheless,this scarce volume has some fantastic information on early coal mining and it now needs someone who will treasure it as it is. B70.
