He was born in Überlingen and moved from Lindau on Lake Constance to Zurich in 1817, where he founded his own lithographic printing company in 1820. In 1830 he founded a lithographic institute with an attached book and art store in Schaffhausen. He was best known for his lithographs in the zoological works of Heinrich Rudolf Schinz.
