Nicolaus Thomas Host war ein bedeutender österreichischer Mediziner und Botaniker, Leibarzt von Kaiser Franz I.. Host war ein hoch angesehener Wissenschaftler, und seine Pflanzenabbildungen gelten als botanisch extrem präzise. Die Feinheit der Linienführung und die Detailtreue (Wurzeln, Samenquerschnitte) waren für die damalige Zeit (und für Mediziner/Apotheker) von höchster Bedeutung zur Identifizierung von Heilpflanzen.
