In the process of refurbishing the Model 1863 Artillery Bits then in service, the decorative “USA” bosses had to be removed. The thin brass shell likely did not survive being removed in a condition that would be acceptable to be reattached.

This is in the Shenandoah Valley. It was later opened up and inspected. It was found to be a "Case Shot" type of ball that was intended to act more like a shotgun shell at a much greater distance. The cannon ball had been filled with lead balls and pine tare.
