This is a RevenueMarine / RevenueCutter Service coat button. The Revenue Marine / Revenue Cutter Service was the forerunner to our modern United States Coast Guard. The back mark -- (star) SCOVILLS & CO (star) WATERBURY -- is a raised mark in a depressed channel (rmdc) that clearly places its production as pre-Civil War in the 1840s and 1850s.
